Bipolar in Tempelhof
What is side one?
The Tempelhof Harbour might be one of the better kept secrets of Berlin. The small rectangular place is surrounded by the majestic red-bricked building of the Ullstein publishing house, it has a host of other old buildings and there is a new shopping center draped around it.
The Burger Bar has a perfect view of that harbour, hidden from street side as it is on the water level. Especially in summer this must be a glorious location. And they have burgers to match it as well: They come with one, two or three patties, in the usual flavours (basic burger, barbecue bacon, etc.). And they have a wide variety of fries (Criss Cut, Shoestring, Kartoffeldipper!) to make the menu a bit exotic. We loved our barbecue burger, juicy and crispy at the same time. Solid stuff!
Eh, side two?
Problem A: The Burger Bar is on the edge of a shopping center. So, although the interior is kind-of-cool (a lot of wood, nice lamps), it will never get cosy in the evening because the TL lighting of the shopping corridors penetrates the restaurant. Now we gays don’t always need cosy dark rooms, but for eating it does create some atmosphere.
Problem B: Some of our burgers (yes, that is plural!) were very well-done. It is obviously a matter of taste whether you like that or not, but usually one asks beforehand. Although the waiters were extremely relaxed and friendly, they omitted this crucial part. So the people in our company who love it rare (#SecretGayGuy) didn’t have the best of nights.
Famous last words?
Are you bipolar now as well and don’t know what to decide? No worries. The Burger Bar is a solid choice if you happen to be in the area, and/or want to enjoy the beautiful views of the harbour. For state-of-the-art, best-in-town burgers though you have to go somewhere else.
