Burger de Ville

The truth and nothing but the truth

How to create word-of-mouth? Buy a really cool retro American Airstream caravan (you know, the shiny silver ones) and start popping up everywhere in Berlin selling delicious homemade burgers. There probably wasn’t any big marketing plan behind it, but that’s how Burger de Ville started, mainly in the area around Zoologischer Garten station.

But success can be a bitch, so the owners decided to move into a permanent location. Probably in the most unfunky (=far away from hipsters) location as possible, close to Kurfürstendamm. So instead of chopping away the plaster from the walls to make the place look ‘authentic Berlin’, the owners went for industrial chic. Basic but cosy benches and tables, sparse lighting with beautiful old-fashioned Edison light bulbs (gays know everything design, of course), finished with a nice layer of American diners: metal plates and metal baskets for your fries.

That was a long story, dude. Ze burgers?!

Yeah, almost forgot about that. We have been lazy and went twice and only tested the pulled pork basically. Because it’s pretty darn good. There must be some hidden ingredient, because after your initial bite (tastes good but plain) after one minute there comes the after-burner: some spicy stuff that sets your mouth mildly on fire (at least for one of us). As if you have just s…. no, just kidding.

The only question mark is whether the pulled pork is really homemade, prepared for at least 24 hours. After eating a lot of the stuff all over Berlin (we’re not monogamous), we sometimes had the impression the meat comes ready-to-go from the same wholesaler, with some exceptions. We doubt whether Burger de Ville is an exception, but they have their secret ingredient. And some interesting experiments from the fries: the Italian version wasn’t a success (with a touch of dry parmezan, brrr), but the truffle version was quite good.

Famous last words?

We genuinely promise to try something other than pulled pork during our next visit. Which might take a while of course, because we won’t eat anything American until Donald Trump has left the White House of course!
