Schiller Burger

The truth and nothing but the truth

If we tell you that ‘Schiller’ refers to the Schiller Kiez, the neighbourhood in Neukölln closest to the former Tempelhof airport and now occupied by hordes of hipsters, what do you think? Hype? Overrated? Much ado about nothing? Exactly!

To be fair, the holy burgers aren’t bad, more about that later. But the restaurant itself is way too small, and equipped with staff that definitely never had a course how to play a great host. To qualify them as rude would be too much, but we have seen as many laughs from them as the number of times Holland became football world champions. Zero, yes exactly 😪 .

In fact, the other branches of Schiller Burger in Berlin are much more pleasant places. In summer, they flame burgers in the summer garden adjacent to the Berghain called Bierhof Rüdersdorf (a hidden treasure, but with a gay staff that won’t stop hitting on you 😅 #SecretGayGuy … you sound like it’s a bad thing 🙃 #GayGuy). And in Pankow, in the north of the city far away from the tourists, is a restaurant that is more spacious and more comfortable as the original ones. Sometimes the copy IS better than the original!

That was a long story, dude. Ze burgers?!

Yes, well. There is a loooong list of very decent burgers in Berlin. And Schiller is amongst them: No top-ten stuff, but the Don Carlos (these ridiculous names are absolutely fucking brilliant, but we old-fashioned people call it a Bacon BBQ burger) had some really tasty meat (though slightly rare), a very nice sesame bun and the usual toppings. The bacon was actually crispy, in contrast to the many places where we almost lost the couple of teeth we have left in our jaw because they didn’t know how to grill them properly. Did we leave the place with our mouths drooling because we just had had the most lovely meat we can imagine (besides the meat of, well, anyway, it doesn’t matter)? No.

Famous last words?

Die Götter Griechenlands. The Gods of Greece. What? That’s what the mix of french fries and sweet potatoes was called. When we saw that, we almost choked of laughter, so funny it seemed. The fun was over by the way when we tasted them, because they were average.
